The fact is its a diverse community. Made up of lots of people who are different. Wishing the immature (your definition or mine?) would go away is really rather silly. You won't play with potheads, I hate carebears, my friend hates people who waste time with frivolous chat and the list goes on.
All you can do is find ways to play with people you like. Take some time to maintain your friends list. When you play with somebody you like, add them. Try to do things with them from time to time. And above all, get in a guild with likeminded people. If you look hard, cant find one, and think your vision has something to offer then start a guild yourself. That can be extremely rewarding and/or rather humbling when you realize that your version of in game paradise is not the same as everybody elses.
Probably, not everybody will agree with me, but trying to change the culture of a whole game is a bit like trying to move a mountain. Better to just find ways to enjoy the game as is than spend your time railing against all those "morons" who don't think we way I do. There are rather a lot of them :-)
cheers,
pin
PS. I haven't noticed a big difference of the people in PvP and PvE. Perhaps higher level PvPers can be a bit harsher in their criticism but there are good and bad people in both.

I agree with you on all points, Guild Wars DOES have a rather large number of extremely immature people. These people can be tolerated if you have enough patience though. I admit I am only 14, but I think if myself as one of the mature players in Guild Wars. The PvP problems you stated do stem from that immaturity, but I believe also come from the Elitism that has infested this game. The idea that if you if go to "N" area and dont use "X" build automatically makes you a noob is disgusting. Most of these Elitists are old players who have STILL not developed a sense of tolerance for other's ideas and opinions. Unfortunately there is nothing that we can do to solve this problem, until perhaps the waning days of GW when all the chapters have been released. By then I would hope that most of them have moved on to the next craze. Until that happens, if it ever does, we just have to continue to remember not to act like them and just ignore it. That's the only choice we are given, IMO.
EDIT: The above poster explains better than I did that there is really nothing we can do to change it, we just have to live with it.

The game should have this label..
/sarcasm on
"Feeling left out, tired of being ignored at home, school and/or work, well we have a new place for you to call home! It's called MMORPG, as long as you can afford the entry fee, you can act anyway you want to. You can talk dirty to strangers, ask for sexual favors, bully, insult, lie cheat, steal, and more to your hearts conent. No monthly fees, just pay and jump right in. *warning: failure to fit in will put you on the receiving end of the aforementioned greif but hey, who cares what happens to those that society deems unworthy anyway!"
/sarcasm off

I would also like to note that [U]anyone[U] who says all the immature players are kids is dealing in a massive generalization and is commpletely and totally wrong.
I realize that what I just typed is in itself a massive generalization, but by the evidence of this thread, there ARE some younger players that do have a sense of maturity, myself included, which therefore makes the statement undeniably true.

On a final note, I would like to say that the guilds with age limits/requirements are only hurting themselves. As they recruit with that age requirement 1. They are depriving their guild from the mature young players and 2. They encourage the older immature ones to be more immature because they are "better" than the young ones not allowed in.

You might want to re-read pindun's post. I'm pretty sure their point is that "it" is all matter of perspective.

I honestly cannot say I share the experiences the vast majority of you seem to have. 90% of the PUG's I am in (and I play with them during most of my playing time) seem focused on the game at hand and rather than diverting attention to talking about sex, drawing anatomical body parts on the mini map, drugs, or anything like that. I get arguments/cursing that flare up as a result of poor playing but even so, it is caused by failure in game rather than unfounded, unprovoked immaturity. Most of the immaturity I see is people who degrade others for spamming and not using proper english. Very mature -_-.
I'm only sixteen years old, and it also irks me to see many of the older players characterize a large part of the player base as "immature", some even not accepting younger players into guilds. People deeming others immature for not using the right builds, asking for help, asking for money, or burning someone for using bad grammar are hypocritical in every way. How many times have we all seen "Kurzick alliance recruiting! Looking for members/18+ only/mature/friendly/ pm me!" Sometimes I wonder if the rash generalizations these so called mature people make are any reflection of their true maturity level.
I consider myself a mature person overall, and I would say I'm nice to others in game. I've found that by helping those players who might be regarded as less mature through nice gestures and such will never result in an ungrateful response. If I see someone asking for help while the "mature" players say "get a life, nerd!" or " or something like that I help the guy out, and he is usually grateful and if I ask him to be a bit more civil, he usually obliges. These are real people in game, and I think some of them just need a bit of egging on oblige to what we'd call civil behavior.

I realize that =). It is perspective, but how we must deal with it is the same.

hubby and i play too
Hi,
Just to let you know. I play and in fact more than my husband does. I too get some comments but usually I don't tell anyone.
I find if I do, some immature (personality not age) person I assume male will want to 'instruct' me on how to play the game. Ahhhhhh! Idiot I got to level 20 all by myself!!!
As for the guild well we belong to a very small one made up of friends.
Good luck.
